Why 'clean it today' is the mistake
Live moss is anchored into the granule layer by rhizoids, and its mat is wedged under the exposed shingle edge. Pull it off live, whether with a pressure washer, a stiff brush or a scraper, and it takes granules and sometimes shingle edges with it. The roof looks clean for a season and then ages fast because the asphalt is exposed to the sun. Dead moss is different. Once a treatment has killed it, the rhizoids let go, the mat dries and shrinks, and the rain and wind take most of it off over four to eight weeks. What is left lifts off with a light touch. No walking on a wet mossy roof, which is as slick as ice. And no rinsing from below that pushes water up under the shingle edge.
The DIY version
For a single-story roof with a walkable pitch and light moss, a hose-end sprayer with a roof moss product, a blower, a stable ladder and a dry day is a reasonable Saturday. Keep both feet on the ladder or on the roof, never on the gutter, and do not step on moss. Treat the whole roof, rinse the plants below, and leave it alone for a month.
It stops being a Saturday when the roof is two stories, steeper than about 6:12, has a thick mat, or is cedar, tile or metal. Each of those changes the method or the risk, and the money saved on a crew is not worth a fall or a ruined roof.
